Unfortunately, upper respiratory illnesses such as the cold and flu (as well as other acute illness such as gastroenteritis—a.k.a., “the stomach flu”) are a fact of life, and at one time or another, we all have to deal with them. While it’s true that a viral illness like the cold typically requires time and rest to resolve itself, your primary care physician can help you deal with your symptoms, make sure that your illness isn’t something more serious, and advise you about the kinds and amounts of fluids you should be consuming to avoid dehydration.  Particularly when a child isn’t feeling well, your family physician is a logical resource for a definitive diagnosis of the issue, advice on over-the-counter medications and needed reassurance for parents.

It’s important to understand the difference between cold and flu symptoms, because a flu can lead to potentially dangerous complications and is definitely worth a visit to your doctor.
