Like high cholesterol, hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) can go unnoticed for years before signs of heart disease begin to appear, and the best way to identify its presence is via regular checkups with your primary care provider. This condition is characterized by blood pressure gauged at greater than 140/90 and can develop over a significant amount of time (in which it is called primary hypertension) or be brought on by another condition such as kidney disease, defects in the blood vessels, tumors of the adrenal gland and even some medications.
